DOING IT FOR THE LADIES, TUMI MORAKE BECOMES
FIRST-EVER EDGARS COMIC OF THE YEAR
“YASS KWEENS, YASS!”
The Savanna Comics’ Choice Awards® is proudly supported by Savanna Premium Cider, Edgars, VUZU-Amp, The Sunday World and Kaya FM 95.9
The First Lady of Comedy, Tumi Morake, can now add the title (and accompanying denim sash) to her long list of accolades: Edgars Comic of the Year.
Tumi made comedy history on Saturday night, 3 September, when she became the first South African female comedian to win the coveted title, considered to be the pinnacle award of the annual Savanna Comics’ Choice Awards®.
And she’s doing it for the ladies, says Tumi. “The female voice in this country needs to be loud and needs to be frank. We need to command our space with the things we say fearlessly, and that is what I believe SA women comedians do.”
In her acceptance speech on stage at the awards show at the Teatro at Montecasino, Tumi paid a special tribute to the women who supported her along the way. Says Tumi: “A special salute to the women who braved the clubs and dragged me along, Judy-Jake Tsie, and the queens that continue to break new ground the industry: Celeste Ntuli, Nina Hastie, Thenjiwe Moseley, Noko Moswete, Angel Blythe Campbey, Mel Jones, Tracy Klass and Shimmy Isaacs. Yass Kweens, Yass!!!!!
As a proud supporter of local talent and category sponsor, Edgars is giving Tumi – and her fellow nominees Carvin Goldstone, Skhumba Hlophe, Mashabela Galane and Loyiso Gola – each a weekend away to the value of R10,000.
